WWOR Considering Dropping Weekend Newscasts

150px-wwor_newjerseyNew York — With nothing set in stone yet, News Corporations’ WWOR-TV (“My 9”) is mulling the idea of cutting news productions on weekends. Richard Huff of the New York Daily News reports that the station could potentially cut Saturday and Sunday Newscasts (the station runs news at 10pm EST). If the cuts are OK’d the station could slash those newscasts as early as this summer.

That could mean weekend anchor Mike Gilliam could end up reporting at WNYW (“FOX5”). The newscasts, Huff explains are anchored by Gilliam, and additionally Jennifer Jordan and Megan Vega.

Similar cuts have have happened in Chicago, where WBBM announced that it will cut Weekend morning newscasts in addition to the anchor shuffling and staff and budget cuts. If  it goes through at WWOR, similar changes are possible.

My Take:

A loss of news production is seemingly an unavoidable situation in today’s economic climate.  If News Corp does cut the weekend news, they might do well to run FOX5 News @10 on WWOR as a simulcast. As for behind the scenes cuts, I’m not really certain how much cutting can be done before the audience starts to notice. Of course this is an opportunity to start hiring new communication and journalism graduates (and lining up soon-to-be graduates like me) to the payroll.
